NNS Delta donates books, school bags to Warri pupils at 70th anniversary outreach
The Nigerian Navy Ship, Delta, has donated 1,200 exercise books, 350 school bags, textbooks, five white boards, markers, footballs and school bells to pupils of Ogiame Primary School, Warri, as part of activities marking the Navy’s 70th anniversary celebration.
The outreach, tagged Educational Rhapsody, also featured a career talk, cultural displays and interactive sessions between naval officers and the pupils, with the Commander of NNS Delta, Commodore Shehu Tasiu, urging the children to remain focused on education and discipline.
Speaking during the event held on Monday in Warri, Delta State, Tasiu said the Nigerian Navy remained committed not only to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain, but also to investing in the education and development of young Nigerians.
The future strength, prosperity and security of Nigeria depend on the quality of knowledge and values we give our children today,” he said.
According to him, the Educational Rhapsody initiative was designed to encourage learning, reward academic effort and inspire pupils to pursue excellence.
These books, writing materials and learning aids are a small but deliberate gesture. They represent our commitment to your educational aspirations here at Ogiame Primary School,” he stated.
Addressing the pupils directly, the naval commander said: “The President of Nigeria, the Governor of Delta State, your Local Government Chairman, your headmaster, your teachers, and every successful person you see today once sat in a classroom like this. So, you too can become anything you want to be if you work hard.”
Tasiu also commended the teachers for their dedication despite prevailing challenges, noting that they were shaping the future of the nation through education and character building.
In her opening remarks, the Headmistress of Ogiame Primary School, Mrs Toju Aziz, described the initiative as timely and impactful.
Speaking on behalf of the pupils, Banro Laju, a Primary Six pupil, thanked the Nigerian Navy for the gesture and said the materials would support their learning.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the Warri South Education Authority, Mrs Augusta Tidi, praised the Navy for extending educational support to schools in the area, adding: “This will impact positively on the children.”
