HONOURABLE ISMAEEL SODIQ OPEYEMI ELEGE SENDS DEMOCRACY DAY GREETINGS, COMMENDS JUNE 12 LEGACY AND GOVERNMENT REFORMS
As Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Honourable Ismaeel Sodiq Opeyemi Elege has extended warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the people of Ona Ara Local Government, Oyo State, and Nigerians across the country, in commemoration of the historic June 12 struggle that paved the way for the nation's democratic journey.
In his Democracy Day message, Honourable Elege described June 12 as a symbol of courage, resilience, sacrifice, and the collective determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values and the sanctity of the people's mandate.
According to him, the significance of June 12 goes beyond a date on the calendar; it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by heroes and heroines of democracy who stood firmly for justice, freedom, and good governance.
"Today, we celebrate not only our democratic achievements but also the unwavering spirit of Nigerians who fought tirelessly to ensure that democracy thrives in our nation. June 12 remains a powerful reminder that the voice of the people must always be respected and protected," he stated.
Honourable Elege paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other democracy advocates whose sacrifices continue to inspire generations of Nigerians. He noted that their commitment to democratic ideals laid the foundation for the stable democratic system currently enjoyed in the country.
While reflecting on the nation's democratic progress, Elege commended ongoing government reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, improving governance, expanding economic opportunities, and enhancing citizens' participation in nation-building.
He emphasized that democratic governance remains the best platform for sustainable development, accountability, transparency, and inclusive growth. He therefore urged political leaders at all levels to remain committed to policies and programmes that improve the welfare of the people.
The grassroots politician further encouraged Nigerians, especially youths, to actively participate in the democratic process by promoting peace, unity, tolerance, and responsible civic engagement.
"As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to nation-building, peaceful coexistence, and collective progress. Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous, and more united Nigeria where the aspirations of every citizen are realized," he added.
Honourable Elege also called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and supportive of initiatives designed to foster economic recovery, social development, and institutional reforms that will strengthen the nation's democratic foundations.
He concluded by wishing all Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration, urging citizens to continue upholding the principles of justice, equity, fairness, and patriotism that define the essence of June 12.
Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
