Five Killed, Eight Rescued in Multiple-Vehicle Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
IBADAN – No fewer than five persons have lost their lives in a devastating multiple-vehicle accident that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Alendtrend News Media Report gathered that the tragic incident happened on Friday evening around Satguru Maharaji Ji Village, causing panic among motorists and residents in the area.
According to information obtained by our correspondent, the accident involved a total of ten vehicles, comprising six trucks, two Toyota Hilux vans, and two cars. The collision reportedly occurred when one of the moving trucks suffered brake failure and rammed into another truck that had been parked by the roadside.
The impact of the crash triggered a chain reaction involving several vehicles and subsequently led to a fire outbreak at the scene.
Emergency responders swiftly mobilized to the location to contain the situation and rescue victims trapped in the wreckage. While five persons were confirmed dead, eight others were rescued alive from the scene and rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, disclosed that personnel of the agency responded promptly after receiving a distress call.
He stated that upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the accident involved six trucks, including gas tankers and trailer trucks, alongside two cars, with a fire outbreak already raging.
“Upon arrival, we discovered that the accident involved six trucks (gas tankers and trailer trucks) and two cars, resulting in a fire outbreak,” Akinwande said.
“Five persons were recovered while eight others were rescued and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), led by SRC Adegbite from Toll Gate, Ibadan, for further medical attention at the nearest hospital.”
The Fire Service boss attributed the cause of the accident to brake failure, a factor that has been linked to several fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
Officials of the FRSC, Oyo State Fire Service, and other emergency agencies worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and restore the free flow of traffic along the busy expressway.
The incident has once again raised concerns over vehicle maintenance and road safety compliance among commercial drivers, particularly operators of heavy-duty trucks plying major highways across the country.
Authorities have urged motorists to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles and adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
