The Nigerian Youth Congress Chairman in Oyo State urges youths to reject political violence, protect their PVCs and take active roles in shaping the state’s political future.

As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Chairman of the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), Oyo State Chapter, Comr. Abdulfatai A. Olagbenro, has called on youths across the state to embrace peace, reject political thuggery and actively participate in the democratic process.

Olagbenro made the call in a press statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan, describing the forthcoming elections as a defining moment for young people in Oyo State.

He stressed that youths must move beyond being used as political instruments and take their rightful place in decision-making, governance and democratic development.

“Do not allow yourselves to be used for ballot box snatching or any form of violence. And do not mortgage your future for a token of N5,000. Your Permanent Voter’s Card is your greatest power; protecting it is protecting your future,” Olagbenro stated.

He encouraged eligible youths who had yet to register as voters to complete the necessary registration process, while those who had registered were urged to collect their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) and prepare to exercise their democratic rights.

NYC Declares Non-Partisan Position
Olagbenro reaffirmed that the Nigerian Youth Congress in Oyo State remained non-partisan and would not endorse any political party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Instead, he said the organisation would promote issue-based political engagement by encouraging candidates to present practical solutions to challenges affecting young people and the wider population.

He identified job creation, education, security, entrepreneurship and digital innovation as critical areas that should shape political discussions ahead of the elections.

The chairman also called on youths to move beyond social media activism by participating directly in the electoral process and holding political aspirants accountable for their promises.

“Whether we belong to APC, PDP, Accord, Labour Party or any other party, we remain Omoluabis first. We must sustain that culture of peace, tolerance and unity from Ibadan to Oke-Ogun, from Ogbomoso to Ibarapa,” he added.

NYC Plans Statewide Voter Education Campaign
As part of efforts to promote responsible political participation, Olagbenro disclosed that the NYC Oyo State Chapter would embark on a statewide voter education and sensitisation tour across the state's 33 local government areas in the coming weeks.

He also announced plans to host the Oyo Youth Leadership Summit 2026, themed “Youth Voices, Youth Power: Advancing Meaningful Participation in Nigeria’s Electoral Process.”

The initiatives, he said, would provide opportunities to educate young people on their electoral rights, encourage peaceful participation and strengthen youth involvement in democratic governance.

Olagbenro concluded by urging Oyo youths to recognise their influence in determining the state's political direction, insisting that young people should not be seen merely as leaders of tomorrow but as active stakeholders in today's democratic process.

He maintained that the choices youths make before and during the 2027 general elections would play a significant role in shaping the future of Oyo State and Nigeria.
