THE VOICE OF EGBEDA:HON.AKINWALE OLUSAYO MICHAEL OUTLINES VISION FOR EFFECTIVE CONSTITUENCY REPRESENTATION
As conversations around the future of Egbeda State Constituency continue to grow, Engr. Hon. Akinwale Olusayo Michael, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) candidate for the Oyo State House of Assembly, has emphasised the importance of people-centred, accessible and accountable representation.
Representation in the Oyo State House of Assembly should go beyond attending legislative sessions.
A constituency representative has responsibilities that include participating in lawmaking, representing constituents' interests, contributing to legislative oversight, engaging with matters relating to the state budget and ensuring that community concerns are brought to the appropriate legislative and governmental channels.
For Egbeda, effective representation can be strengthened around five key principles.
- LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE A representative should remain accessible to constituents and create regular opportunities for residents to express their concerns. This can include community meetings, ward-level consultations, town-hall discussions, youth and women's forums, engagements with community leaders and accessible communication channels. The objective is simple: the concerns of residents should remain part of the conversation beyond election periods.
- TURNING CONCERNS INTO REPRESENTATION Residents face concerns relating to roads, education, healthcare, security, employment, markets, infrastructure and other community needs. Effective representation requires these concerns to be properly identified, documented and presented through appropriate legislative and governmental channels. While a legislator may not personally control every government agency or development project, a representative can use appropriate legislative and oversight mechanisms to draw attention to issues affecting the constituency and follow up where possible.
- KEEPING CONSTITUENTS INFORMED Representation should not be a one-way relationship. Constituents should be able to understand the issues being raised on their behalf, relevant legislative developments, government programmes affecting Egbeda, constituency engagements, progress on identified concerns and the challenges or limitations encountered. Regular communication can help strengthen trust between the representative and the people.
- ACCOUNTABILITY AND FEEDBACK A strong representative-constituent relationship should provide room for questions, feedback and constructive criticism. The relationship should not be: People → Election → Silence It should be: People → Representation → Action → Feedback → Accountability For Engr. Hon. Akinwale Olusayo Michael, the conversation around representation presents an opportunity to focus attention on how constituents can remain connected with their elected representative throughout the tenure of office.
- REPRESENTING EVERYONE Representation should serve the entire constituency, regardless of political affiliation, community, age, gender or previous electoral support. Every ward and community within Egbeda State Constituency has a stake in its representation. Every ward. Every community. Every generation. Every voice matters.
BEYOND ELECTION SEASONS
The true test of constituency representation extends beyond campaign periods.
Elections provide citizens with the opportunity to choose their representatives, but the responsibilities of representation begin after the election and continue throughout the tenure.
For Egbeda, important questions should therefore include:
Is the representative accessible to the people?
Are constituents regularly consulted?
Are community concerns properly documented and presented?
Are residents kept informed about legislative activities?
Is there a mechanism for feedback and accountability?
These questions can help keep the conversation focused on the responsibilities of public office and the expectations of the people.
THE VOICE OF EGBEDA
For Engr. Hon. Akinwale Olusayo Michael, the message is centred on building a closer connection between the people of Egbeda and the legislative process.
The vision is one where constituents have avenues to express their concerns, where community issues receive appropriate representation, where information flows between the people and their representative, and where accountability remains an essential part of public service.
Egbeda deserves representation that listens.
Egbeda deserves representation that communicates.
Egbeda deserves representation that remains accountable.
THE VOICE OF EGBEDA MUST BE HEARD — NOT ONLY DURING ELECTIONS, BUT THROUGHOUT THE JOURNEY OF REPRESENTATION.
