2027: OYERE CHAMPIONS PEACEFUL NURTW LEADERSHIP, CALLS FOR END TO STEREOTYPES IN OYO STATE
For decades, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has remained an important part of Nigeria’s transportation system and grassroots economy. Millions of Nigerians depend on transport workers every day, making the sector essential to commerce, mobility and community life.
Yet, despite this importance, the NURTW has often been burdened by stereotypes that associate transport workers with violence, disorder and political confrontation.
In Oyo State, such perceptions can sometimes overshadow the contributions of the many hardworking and responsible people within the transport sector.
Alhaji Olaniyi Jelili Oyere believes that narrative can change.
With more than three decades of experience as a member of the NURTW, Oyere represents a vision of leadership built around peace, dialogue, discipline, mutual respect and responsible engagement.
His belief is simple: the NURTW can be transformed into an institution known not for confrontation, but for professionalism, service, organisation and positive contributions to society.
A Record Built on Peaceful Engagement
Throughout his years of involvement in the NURTW, Oyere has maintained that disagreements should be resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation.
For him, true leadership is not measured by the ability to create fear or disorder, but by the ability to prevent conflict, unite people and protect peaceful coexistence.
His approach places emphasis on communication, consultation and respect for established laws and institutions.
At a time when political activities are often viewed through the lens of existing stereotypes, Oyere believes transport workers participating in political activities should demonstrate discipline and responsible conduct.
Political participation, in his view, should never be an excuse for violence or intimidation.
Exposure Beyond Borders, Perspective Beyond Politics
Oyere’s perspective has also been influenced by his exposure to different societies and transportation systems outside Nigeria.
His travels to countries and cities including Saudi Arabia, Canada and Dubai have provided opportunities to observe different approaches to transportation, urban mobility, organisation and public conduct.
Those experiences have strengthened his conviction that Oyo State can build a more organised and professional transportation sector.
In many societies, transport workers operate within structured systems where professionalism, safety, discipline and public order are prioritised.
Oyere believes similar principles can be adapted to the realities of Oyo State.
His vision is therefore not about taking the transport sector backwards. It is about moving it forward — toward greater organisation, professionalism, peace and respect.
His Support for APC and Senator Sharafadeen Alli
Oyere’s support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly the governorship ambition of Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, is rooted in his belief in political participation, grassroots mobilisation and the pursuit of a better Oyo State.
His political engagement, as he presents it, is based on conviction and peaceful mobilisation rather than intimidation or confrontation.
For Oyere, political loyalty should not require the abandonment of civility.
Mobilising people should not mean creating disorder.
And membership of the NURTW should never automatically translate into an assumption of violence or criminality.Ending the Stigmatization of Transport Workers
Oyere is calling for a broader understanding of the people who work within Nigeria’s transportation sector.
A NURTW member is not automatically a thug.
A transport worker is not automatically violent.
A political gathering is not automatically chaotic.
And a large mobilisation is not automatically a threat to peace.
People should ultimately be judged by their actions and conduct, rather than assumptions based on their profession or organisational affiliation.
Across Oyo State and Nigeria, thousands of transport workers contribute daily to keeping communities connected and economies moving.
Oyere believes these contributions deserve recognition.
He envisions a NURTW that commands respect through discipline, service, organisation and responsible leadership.
A Greater Oyo Through Peaceful Leadership
Oyere’s message to Oyo State is straightforward: the state does not need another chapter of confrontation and disorder. It needs a future built around peace, development, unity and innovation.
His vision is for an Oyo State where political mobilisation remains peaceful, transportation is better organised, workers are treated with dignity, communities remain united and disagreements are settled through dialogue.
With more than 30 years of experience within the NURTW and exposure to transportation systems beyond Nigeria, Oyere believes the sector possesses enormous potential for transformation.
He seeks to promote a culture where peace is strength, dialogue is leadership and development is the ultimate destination.
