2027: Makinde Tells APC’s Sharafadeen Alli to Focus on Governorship Race, Not His Administration
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, to focus on the 2027 governorship election rather than making his administration the central issue of his campaign.
Makinde made the remarks on Monday at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, where members of the Boye Nation movement were formally received into the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The governor, who is also the APM presidential candidate, reportedly challenged Alli to direct his attention to the governorship contest and other candidates, particularly the APM candidate, Mr Bimbo Adekanmbi, instead of consistently criticising his administration.
The exchange comes amid heightened political activities in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections, with Alli and his campaign organisation recently raising concerns about aspects of the Makinde administration and the credentials of his preferred successor.
Alli's camp has also maintained that the 2027 governorship contest should focus primarily on the candidates seeking the people's mandate, rather than Makinde, who will not be contesting the governorship election.
The political development adds to the growing debate over succession in Oyo State, as the APC, APM and other political parties intensify their mobilisation ahead of the election.
The YUU-themed event — Young, United and Unstoppable — brought together thousands of young people and political supporters for a combination of entertainment, youth engagement and political mobilisation.
A major highlight was the formal defection of Ajiboye Akande Sangogade, popularly known as Boye Nation, and members of his political structure from the APC to the APM.
Sangogade, an Ibadan-based political organiser and associate of former Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, led his supporters into the APM during the gathering.
The event also featured performances by popular Fuji and contemporary Nigerian artistes, including Alhaji Taye Currency and Babatunmise.
Several APM stakeholders and candidates across the governorship, deputy governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and Oyo State House of Assembly races were also present.
Makinde further highlighted the importance of his administration's record in shaping voters' assessment of the political direction of the state ahead of 2027.
The gathering consequently served as both a youth-focused entertainment event and a political mobilisation platform, while the exchange between Makinde and Alli reflected the increasingly active political contest surrounding the 2027 Oyo State governorship election.
